The speculation about the recent awards show was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be building a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
